Trainee Driving Instructors Selection Page

Selection

The Big Red L Company is one of Kent's most recognised driving schools. We really can't afford to take on every one who applies to us to become a driving instructor. Our reputation is very important also it's not fair on them or on our pupils.

Our small but highly experienced training team are all ORDIT registered and come highly recommended from many past customers. They are headed up by Graham Hooper, who is one of the most highly qualified and experienced instructor trainers in the UK.

Introduction

  • One of the big problems in this profession is the fact that only 9% of people who sign up for a driving instructor course in the hope of becoming an ADI ever complete the course and pass all the exams. Considering most driving instructor courses cost between £2000 and £3500 you have to be very certain  that this is what you want to do and perhaps more importantly - can do!
  • This 9% success rate is something that does not always reflect on the quality of the trainer. Often it is the salesman who will say that you can do it, regardless of your ability, character and personality - Commission can be a powerful thing!
  • Rumour has it that there will soon be a psychometric test for all applicants, the DSA will probably be in charge of administering this. More details to follow.

Statutory Requirements Prior to Selection

To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you must:

  • Hold a full UK / EU / EEA unrestricted car driving licence
  • Have held it for a total of 4 out of the last 6 years prior to registration
  • Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the 4 years prior to being entered in the Register
  • Be a fit and proper person to have your name entered in the Register; and pass the Register qualifying exam
  • Register within 12 months of passing the Part 3 exam

We can help you work through these rules and will give you a definite YES or NO as to whether you can proceed to the next stage of selection

Presentation / Interview
  • Please email us or phone to arrange a presentation at your convenience, this is a 90 minute session aimed at informing you of how we operate. We will outline the course and the opportunities available once you are qualified. We will be asking you quite a few questions during this time.
  • No charge or obligation
Driving Assessment
  • We will arrange for Graham Hooper to assess your driving standard. It involves a 2 hour assessment / demonstration.
  • This assessment session is subject to the trainers specified charge.
  • Don't worry too much about your current standard of driving, as at this stage we will be only looking for your ability and attitude towards learning.
Decision

Once we have completed the interview / presentation and finished the assessment drive, we will send you away with a copy of the ADI14 which is a government booklet informing potential driving instructors more about the related structures and processes involved in becoming an ADI.

We will let you know within 2 working days if we think you are suitable for the course.

It is important for you to research which company is really the best for you to train with. We are always delighted when we see someone research several possibilities and then choose us.

Take it seriously - your whole future career can depend on it!
