BTEC in Driving Science

The new BTEC in Driving Science developed by a2om is being hailed as an important move forward in road safety.

The Big Red L Company has had a detailed look at the product and have always wanted to have such materials to help deliver their driver training programme at the highest level possible.

We are delighted therefore to be asked by a2om to partner with them in Kent, London and parts of the South East. We will be using our extensive schools contacts to promote the new BTEC course (equivalent to a GCSE A* to C)) to all secondary schools in the region. We will also be seeking to use the media and all road safety stakeholders to make students everywhere understand that the benefits of doing this course are far greater than just passing the driving test. The Big Red L Company a partner of A2om

We have selected several of our own instructors and lots of independent ADI's to receive specific a2om training in how to deliver this course. To do this effectively we will need both depth and breadth in our instructor base and will be ensuring that all will give tuition of the highest standard. Quality is important to us - It always has been.

We will be acting as a hub for many ADI's in the region and should any instructor want to join this partnership they should contact us direct, there may be a waiting list as this is already proving to be a very popular course. We hope that one day it will be the industry standard. Having said that a2om are not sitting back, they have a real commitment to developing this to be a world class project and are constantly looking to improve it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a BTEC?

A BTEC Intermediate level is an academic qualification equivalent to a GCSE. It is accredited by EdExcel , the UK’s largest awarding body, providing academic and vocational qualifications to more than 25,000 places of learning here, and in over 100 countries worldwide. In the UK, EdExcel offers qualifications and testing in more than 24,000 schools, 450 further education colleges, more than 80 higher education institutions, 600 public and private sector employers and, increasingly, e-learning providers. EdExcel will verify the quality of the course and its delivery.

  1. What are the benefits?

You will receive a structured course from a fully trained instructor who is qualified and registered with a2om . You will be periodically assessed throughout the learning process to allow you to progress at a pace that is right for you. On successful completion of the course you will receive a BTEC Intermediate Award in Driving Science which is an equivalent to a GCSE. You can add this to your CV which will not only provide evidence to future employers of your driving ability but also your keenness to strive for a proven level of skill, aptitude and attitude.

  1. How much will it cost me?

With the current introductory offer it costs the student £175 to register for the BTEC course. However insurance companies are so impressed with the course that they will offer discounts on insurance that could significantly offset this fee. Included in the fee is a unique e-learning based lesson support system. Students can access will be able to access this on line in their own time and when recommended by your instructor as part of the structured BTEC curriculum. We are currently working with schools, road safety organisations and industry to try and get subsidies that will reduce the up front costs of the course.

  1. How many extra lessons will I need?

Everyone learns at a different pace. Because this course is structured, you may not need more lessons even though there is a module after you have passed your test. You should be better prepared for your test and therefore save money with retests. You will however be expected to access the learning materials in your own time, and complete in car and on line assessments.

  1. Will it delay my starting to learn to drive?

Not at all. You should check with your instructor whether he/she is registered to deliver the BTEC. If not,  we can possibly recommend someone in your area.

  1. Do I have to pass my test to qualify for my BTEC?

Yes.  Passing the test will allow you to proceed onto unit five of the course. Passing your test is just a part of the process, and as you have had received structured learning you should be better prepared and therefore more likely to pass first time.

  1. I am already learning. Can I take the BTEC or is it too late?

No it is not too late, provided your instructor is registered with  and trained by a2om. Depending where you are in the learning process you will be assessed accordingly and brought into the process at the appropriate place. There will, however, be no reduction in registration fee.

  1. Will my lessons be more expensive?

Instructors who are qualified to deliver the BTEC are those who are delivering a wider syllabus and a higher standard. These instructors could be more expensive due to their quality, but you need to remember that good structured training can save you money in the long term and could save your life.

I am delighted to see a²om’s national BTEC scheme bringing to the UK some of the most advanced learning from around the world.  a²om is to be commended for its initiative to counter some of the significant problems affecting young drivers and their passengers, as well as delivering an academic and vocational qualification for the young driver that may also broaden the base of employment opportunity for those opting for the a²om course over a simple driving test’.

HRH Prince Michael of Kent, GCVO, Patron of the Global Road Safety Commission

Being able to drive is an important route to employment, and should be embedded in our education system; driving well provides a route to continued employment - this breakthrough will give young people a chance in life which was just not there before’.
